i analyzed this on my fantroll tumblr, but i’d like to revisit after laying in bed and thinking about the situation again. there are three frames of reference:  1) jane + john on the battleship traveling at the speed of light, 2) hussiebot in an unknown frame of reference, and 3) the rest of the trolls + dave + rose in an unknown frame of reference that doesn’t really matter in this.

so assuming hussiebot is in a frame of reference similar to us humans’ (earth), then jane + john should have crossed the yellow yard (literally a yard) in …. well three nanoseconds? (i don’t want to calculate it, but it should be a minuscule amount of time.) yet it takes them three years (jane + john’s f.o.r.) but it’s only three nanoseconds in hussiebot’s eyes.

does that mean hussiebot’s universe is traveling significantly faster than jane + john’s almost-speed-of-light since he has the shorter amount of time in his reference? because i thought if people are traveling at the speed of light, they experience the shorter amount of time and spacial lengths are shortened (the yard should have seemed less yard-ish and more inch-ish for jane+john). but the yard is elongated to a length that would take three years to cross at the speed of light. a yard is ~three light years long?

unless hussie’s frame of reference is traveling faster than jane+john’s, which would explain why he only sees it as three nanoseconds.

however, jane+john are moving at constant speed and presumably will reach the end of the yard at some point. if hussie is going faster than them, they’ll…. never reach it? just looking at that, hussie should be traveling close to the speed of light, too, but still slower than jane+john. i can’t tell which frame of reference is traveling faster relative to ‘us’ because it seems a bit contradictory.
